Poor weather increases your risk of being seriously injured or killed in a car wreck. Weather-related collisions account for 16% of all fatal accidents and 19% of all accidents with injuries, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
When you are driving in inclement conditions, you may need to take steps to protect yourself. Here are three tips to keep yourself safe on the road when the weather turns foul.
1. Focus on visibility
Bad weather can severely limit your ability to see other vehicles and hazards. If driving in precipitation, such as rain, sleet or snow, you should use your windshield wipers. You may also need to adjust the climate control in your car to prevent the windows from fogging up.
You should also turn on your headlights to make it easier to see what is on the road. In fog specifically, you will want to use either your fog lights or low beams as bright lights can reduce visibility.
2. Slow down
Driving at slower speeds reduces the risk that your tires will slip on wet or icy streets. It also provides you with more time to respond to any hazards that may appear.
3. Avoid large trucks
Trucks and other large automobiles pose a greater threat to your safety in certain conditions, such as high winds, due to their size and weight. Make sure to leave plenty of room between you and these types of vehicles.
Despite taking precautions, you could still find yourself seriously hurt from a weather-related accident. A strong case could help you receive the compensation you need to recover from your injuries.
